One of the most common questions I get is about which teeth-straightening system works faster: traditional braces or clear aligners?  The answer is, it depends!

Differences between Braces and Aligners

Traditional braces and aligners obviously look different and because of that, they work differently as well.  Braces are composed of brackets cemented to your teeth and a wire which is usually bound to the brackets with elastic ties.  Clear aligners are a set of custom-made trays that you change out approximately every 2 weeks as your teeth move.  The most common brand for clear orthodontic devices is Invisalign and is sometimes used interchangeably with the term clear aligners.  (This is similar to Kleenex and tissue paper).

Advantages of Braces

Traditional braces are efficient in correcting any severe rotations, malocclusions and closing gaps.  If a patient has a crossbite, open bite, underbite and an overbite, braces will typically work faster for them.  Basically, braces are better for more complex treatments.  A main advantage of braces is that they are bound to your teeth and so you don’t have to remember to take them on and off.

Advantages of Clear Aligners

Clear aligners have many advantages.  First, they are more esthetic in the sense that you don’t show any metal when you smile.  Second, you can eat what you like (with moderation, of course!) since there is no risk to damaging brackets.  They are easier to clean.  And it’s easier to keep your teeth clean too! There is no hassle of cleaning around brackets and wires.  The main disadvantage to clear aligners is compliance.  You have to remember to wear them as prescribed by your dentist, otherwise your treatment gets delayed.

Clear aligners work best for patients with mild crowding and spaces. They work best when your back teeth already fit well together and only minor movements are needed to straighten teeth.

Wow what a great article! I am less nervous to get braces now and I think the long term benefits for me would be through braces.
